Unit 1

We are going to ascend the great wall tomorrow morning. So I’d like to go to bed

early and have a good sleep this evening. You know climbing the great wall is not an easy job.

? Jack: Great. The Great Wall is very famous and becomes a must for tourist in Beijing.

Would you tell me something about it?

OK. The construction of the great wall took altogether over 2000years.it started in

the Zhou dynasty in the 7th century. B.C. And continued until Ming Dynasty in the 15th century A.D. The existing wall was built in the Ming Dynasty.

? Jack: The Great Wall is indeed the crystallization of the industry and wisdom of the

Chinese people and also a symbol of ancient Chinese culture. Then why the ancient people built the wall?

It was constructed to guard against the invasion by nomadic tribes from the north.

When enemy troops approached, guards on watch would send smoke signals from the beacon-fire towers as an alarm.

? Jack: How did they manage to do so? Can you be more specific? ?

Those towers on the wall are spaced at equal distances from each other. When

guards in a tower saw the signals from its neighbor, they immediately did the same thing .In this way; the signals would be relayed to the capital. ?

? Jack: what the smart idea the ancient people had! I was told that in china. People usually

call the Great Wall “Ten Thousand Li Long Wall”. Does it really mean that long?

Yes, exactly. It runs all the way across the eastern half of china with a length of

about 6 000 kilometers.

? Jack: 6 000 kilometers! It is unbelievable. 6 000

The Great Wall is said to be the only building on the earth that can be seen from the

outer space.

? Jack: I believe so. I once learned that The Great Wall in china has been ranked one of the

Eight Great Wonders in the world.

Li Ying: Oh, it seems to me that you already know a lot about the Great Wall.

Jack: To tell you the truth, I am interested in Chinese culture and specialize in the study of the history of China. I even know the story of “Mengjiangnu Weeping on the Great Wall”.

? Li Ying: Really? That’s a tragic story. It took place in the reign of Emperor Qinshihuang,

the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty.

? Jack: Yes. Mengjiangnu was a very good wife. One winter, she came to the Great Wall

with warm clothes for her husband, but her husband had already died. She was heartbroken and wept so bitterly that the Great Wall collapsed.

? Li Ying: Perfectly right. When Mengjinagnu saw her husband’s body lying under the wall,

she became so grief-stricken that she threw herself into the sea. What a faithful wife!

? Jack: Yes. Now my suggestion is that you should have a good rest tonight. Otherwise, you

won’t be a great man tomorrow.

? Li Ying: Oh, yes. “If we fail to reach the Great Wall, we are not men.” See you then. ? Jack: I just can’t wait to be there. Good night.

? Dialogue Two:

Seville

? Journalist: Thank you for accepting our interview. Spain is a leading tourism country in

Europe. It once held the World EXPO in Seville in 1992. Its rich experience in tourism operation and management is a valuable asset to China, especially to Shanghai, since it will be the host of the World EXPO in 2010.

? NATALLA: I am very honored to. And it gives me pleasure to share what we have

learned from the experience of hosting the world EXPO.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

? ? ?

内容?

Journalist: It is reported that the tourism revenue has reached 12﹪of GDP in Spain. What is included in this revenue?

NATALLA: According to the traditional definition, tourism revenue simply refers to revenues from tourism services, such as hotels, travel agencies, and catering.

Journalist: How about now? Is there any change in this definition?

NATALLA: Now it also includes revenues from transportation, tourists’ consumption, and joint investments for direct tourism business, such as exhibitions.

Journalist: In what ways do you think will the EXPO promote the development of its host city?

NATALLA: EXPO 2010 will see a lot of people coming to Shanghai. This is an opportunity where the city can show the world its rapid development and its image of an international metropolis.

Journalist: What suggestions do you have for Shanghai to be a better host of the EXPO?

? NATALLA: I suggest that Shanghai should not build too many new hotels or restaurants.

Instead, it had better improve and renovate the existing facilities.

? Journalist: As we know, many cities have found that they face a financial loss after

holding EXPO. Is that true

? NATALLA: Yes. We have never heard a single city claim that it can make profits on

holding EXPO. In fact, it might be very lucky if it can break even with government subsidies. EXPO Seville was held more than ten years ago, and ended with a loss of nearly $300 million.

? Journalist: How did Seville make up for their losses?

? NATALLA: Considering the increased awareness of Seville, once a small city hardly

known to the outside world, it cannot be counted as a real loss.
