When I was just 16, my father decided to turn an old guesthouse into a hotel, and he experimented with everything. None of us had ever worked in a hotel before, but my dad was sure of what guests would like to see.
For a month that summer, I served as a waitress at breakfast and dinner, which gave me the middle of the day free for studying. Like all the others, I did what the instructions said and treated the guests as though they were special visitors in my own home.
I soon learned how to deal with the most daunting person in the kitchen: the cook, Gordon. He had a great ability to become very angry for no clear reason. I avoided him as much as possible and always took the dishes with a frozen expression on my face which was turned into a sweet smile in the space between kitchen and dining room.
Breakfast waitressing was, I found, more enjoyable than the dinner service. The guests came wandering into the dining room, looking with appreciation at the view of the sea and islands through the dining room window. It was funny how differently people behaved in the evenings, dressed up and talking with louder, colder voices, not always returning my smile. However, that all changed when dad created a special role for me.
It began with a few common cakes for the guests’ packed lunches and progressed to fancy cakes for afternoon teas. This led to the climax: a nightly show known as Lucy’s Sweet Trolley. Every evening, I carried the most amazing collection of cakes and other desserts. Most were things I had invented myself and I had cooked all of them. Some – Jacobit Grenades, Mocha Genghis Khan and Goat’s Milk Bavarios to name a few – were really strange. It was dad’s idea that I should dress smartly and stop at each table and recite the name of each dish.
21. What did the people working at the hotel have in common? A. They all understood the guests’ expectations. B. They all studied at the middle of the day.
2
C. they all had enough experience. D. They all followed the rules.
22. What does the underlined word “daunting” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Careful B. Nervous C. Interesting D. Frightening 23. Why did Lucy enjoy serving breakfasts more than dinners? A. The guests were friendlier.
B. There were more types of food to satisfy the guests. C. The dining room was quieter.
D. The guests dressed up for the beginning of a new day. 24. What was special about the food on Lucy’s Sweet Trolley? A. It was based on traditional dishes. B. It contained a number of new creations.
C. It was made following her father’s instructions. D. It was prepared along with the food for lunches.

The year 2015 saw another boom in TV drama adaptations of online literature. Despite the difficulty of adapting original works, these popular novels on the Internet were screened one by one. Some enjoyed a great success while some were criticized by the audiences.
My Sunshine My Sunshine is a TV drama adapted from Gu Man's novel of the same title. It stars Wallace Chuang and Tang Yan, premiering(初次上演) in January, 2015. The drama portrays a man and a woman's reunion and long-lasting romance after seven years of separation. The novel itself has been popular on the Internet and was published in 2005. Wallace Chuang soon rose to become a romantic icon among female viewers because of the role he played in the adaptation, presenting an ideal image of lover to the audiences.
The Lost tomb The Lost Tomb is an action and adventure TV adaptation of a popular online novel by Xu Lei. This is the first seasonal online TV series in China and the novel is scheduled to be dramatized in eight seasons, one season for each year. The first season was released in June of 2015. The novel series of the same name is about five people's adventure in ancient tombs, and it enjoyed a wide readership since it was released online in 2006. Thus the adapted TV series had been accordingly highly expected by its fans but turned out to be disappointing. Although there were 24,000,000 hits on the web within the first two minutes of its debut(初次登台), the season was later criticized by the audiences for its weak storyline and poor quality. Some lines of the series even became jokes on the social media.
Nirvana in Fire Nirvana in Fire is also adapted from an online novel of the same name written by Hai Yan, the adaptation for the first time found its way on the screen in September 2015. Staring Hu Ge and Liu Tao, the series shows a talented military strategist endeavoring to clear his name through continuous fights. The fictional characters and dynasty let the adaptation smartly avoid being criticized for not sticking to historical accuracy. And the drama’s delicate internal settings and impeccable storyline were highly praised by the audiences.
Hua Xu Yin Hua Xu Yin is about a princess who sacrificed her life for the country but later was saved and began her own adventures with another name. It is also a TV series adaptation of an online novel of the same title written by Tang Qi. The series premiered in July 2015, staring Lin Yuan and Zheng Jiaying. However, it did not get as much attention as its rivals. According to the online critics, the lead roles and their costumes were not appealing enough in the adaptation.

As with any house guests, indoor plants require a certain amount of basic, regular attention if they are going to feel at home. The first consideration when purchasing plants is to make reasonably sure that they are suitable for the condition in which they are going to be housed.
A general rule for most plants being brought indoors for the first time is to ensure that they have reasonable temperature of not less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit, a position out of cold air, safe from pets and not exposed to strong sunlight.
Plants love company. When plants are growing together, they create an atmosphere of damp around themselves which is far more beneficial than hot dry conditions. A group of plants will also present a more pleasing picture and provide an opportunity for a creative arrangement. There is no secret to this. Just rely on your natural feeling for harmony.
Watering and feeding plants are probably the two areas of care that are the least well understood, but, again, if you follow a few simple rules, your plants should do well. Cold water direct from the tap can have a frightening effect on the roots of delicate plants. Slightly warm water is therefore the answer. It is usually better to pour water on to the soil on the surface of the pot rather than put the water into the pot holder at the bottom. Avoid giving small amount of water at regular intervals(间隔)---- it is much better to wet the soil right through the pot in one go and then to allow it to dry noticeably before giving it a further watering.
The majority of indoor plants will be in active growth from March until October, and during this time, the established ones will benefit from regular feeding. This may mean feeding with a weak liquid fertilizer(肥料) at each watering or at intervals of a week or ten days with fertilizer at a standard strength. It is important, however, to ensure that plants are not fed when growth is inactive, when the soil in the pot is dry, or too soon after the plants has been potted up.
28. In Paragraph 2, the author mainly tells us to___________. A. buy plants that help clean indoor air B. create a new environment with plants
C. put plants on the sunny side of the room D. make sure of suitable conditions for plants 29. What’s the benefit of plants growing together? A. It provides owners good company. B. It helps the air around them slightly wet.
C. It makes it convenient to look after them. D. It allows owners to draw a pleasant picture.
30. While watering the plants, what should we remember to do?
A. Use water that is a little warm. B. Pour the water into the pot holder. C. Give small amount of water at one time. D. Consider further watering in dry weather.
21. What is the best time to feed the plants?
