An Appreciation of Symbolism in The Cast of Amontillado

I think the use of symbolism in The Cast of Amontillado is very good and it has a deep impression on me .

In novel , there are three kinds of important symbols . One is bell , one is flambeaux , and the other is skeleton . There were some bells on Fortunato’s cap , every time ,when he was going to drink the wine or stepped into the depth of vault , the bell would jungle . It must be a kind of warning , and it was warning Fortunato that there must be some kind of dangers and that he should be alert enough .

When they went into the vault , they took two flambeaux . At the beginning , the flame of flambeaux is very bright , but when they went more deeply , the flame is rather dim . Flambeaux symbolizes brightness and life . So when Fortunato went more deeply , the brightness is dimmer , it also means that he was close to death and far away from life , so the dim flambeaux symbolizes that he had less hope of survival . At last , when he died ,the flame also died out .

Skeleton is the symbolization of death . When Fortunato went into the vault , he met some skeletons ,it means he had met the God of Death . The more deeply he went , the more skeletons he met , there were more dangers , he was more closer to death . So at last , he died on piles of skeletons .

So I think the use of symbolism of the novel is vivid , and it makes a deep impression on me .
