School’s out. It’s been a long day, so you head home to relax. You’re greeted by a friend who’s happy to see you, listens to you talk about recess, tells you a new joke, helps you put away your school stuff(东西),and reminds you to text your cousin happy birthday. And that’s before he helps you with your homework.

This is your future, and it all starts with a knee high robot called NAO (pronounced NOW). It kind of looks 1ike you, walks and dances, listens and talks, and even learns and thinks for itself. Its creators predict that the state of the art robot could be a companion at home by the year 2040.

This $16,000 robot recognizes human facial features, so it knows who you are. NAO can even express emotions. It represents the new generation of “autonomous” or self guided robots. These robots can sense, think, and act. Other robots might do two out of the three. For example, a robot might sense things using cameras and think using computers, but with no arms, wheels, or claws, it can’t act. Other robots can move and sense things, but can’t think for themselves. These aren’t self guided robots. But NAO can do it all.

“You can program your computer to give NAO what could be called personality,” says Natanel Dukan of Aldebaran Robotics, the French company that built NAO. The robot has cute, childlike features—a high voice, small body, big eyes, and a large head. “There are things that are known to have an emotional appeal to people,” robot expert Dan Kara says, “NAO’s friendly design helps in one of NAO’s main functions—to teach people how useful personal robots can be. Someday it may help you pass a test!”

31. What do we know about NAO from the first two paragraphs? A. It is as tall as humans. B. It is highly intelligent.

C. It is widely used in schools now. D. It is designed to help with the housework. 32. The author develops the third paragraph mainly _______ . A. by cause and effect B. by order in time C. by comparison D. by process

33. According to Dan Kara, NAO is _________. A. silent B. low cost C. lightweight D. user friendly 34. The main purpose of the text is to _________. A. ask people to buy the robot B. introduce a new kind of robot C. do an experiment about robots D. compare different kinds of robots

As I drive about the Sois in rural Thailand, I often catch little glimpses of things that barely register on the mind as the scenery flies by. I wish that I had the time to stop and investigate further as I’m driving by, but time is more valuable than all the money in the world. I wish I had more.

I once had a guy wave to me as I passed him. He yelled out something, almost in greeting, as if he knew me. I wonder if we knew each other once, and if he recognized my soul and just had to yell: hello. I wish I had stopped and said hello too.

I saw two young girls, dressed in school uniforms. They were holding hands, talking, walking down the road, and teasing each other as they walked along. As I passed, the one closest to the truck looked up. She was close enough to touch almost. Her smiling face, her clear eyes and golden smooth skin are there in my mind’s eye now. I can see her as if she were standing next to me. Once in a while her face jus pops into my head. Why? Why is she still there?

I stopped at a road stop on a corner one time. An old lady standing by the roadside walked over to the truck and put her hand on my arm and smiled at me. Her palm was so cool in such hot weather. She said something in Thai with a smile and walked away. Who was she? Why did I just sit there and let her touch me? Her cool touch almost seemed familiar; like my long dead grandmother’s relaxing cool touch remembered from when I was just a little boy.

I need more time. I need to stop the truck more often, and just say hello. Things glimpsed along the road are often far more interesting and wonderful than that which seems to consume our daily lives. Slow down. Stop the truck. Get out, and say hello. 35. What kind of life does the author normally lead? A. Busy. B. Tiring. C. Meaningless. D. Boring. 36. The author describes the two school girls in great details to show_________. A. his anger for being bothered B. his love of his own daughter C. his interest in observing people D. the deep impression they left on him 37. Why does the author compare the old lady with his grandmother? A. The old lady looked like his grandmother. B. He suggests the old lady had very cold hands. C. He suggests the old lady’s touch was comforting. D. The old lady reminded him of his entire childhood. 38. What is the purpose of the author to write the passage? A. To express his poverty. B. To describe his easy life. C. To show his wish to communicate. D. To suggest enjoying the scenery outside.
