Unit 4 Body language

Ⅰ.阅读理解

A

(2017·重庆适应性测试)

Just a couple of hours ago, I was on the plane, ready to fly home from London. The flight had been delayed by a few hours so it felt good to be so close to take-off. I had my iPod in place and a new book to read. Then, over the loudspeaker came the pilot's voice:“The ground crew has found a metal instrument in one tire. We regret that we must cancel this flight.”

The passengers' reactions that announcement led to were interesting. One man close to me began to argue with a flight attendant. A couple in another row complained loudly. A businessman in a black suit actually kicked the seat in front of him. Yet some passengers responded differently. An elderly gentleman smiled as he helped others take their bags down from the overhead compartments. A teenager, rather than trying to rush off the plane like most of the other passengers, stopped to help a woman with a disability. The lady sitting next to me laughed and said:“Hey, it's not the end of the world,” before she made a call to her kids and shared her adventure with them. The wisest among us have a remarkable ability to maintain grounded when times get tough.

No life is perfect; mine certainly isn't. We all must face challenges, both large and small. You and I have the power to choose to rise above the external circumstances. We always have the choice to be strong and kind when things fall apart.

That's grace under pressure. My seatmate was right — things could have been so much worse. Anyway, I am safe. I have my health. I have two wonderful children. I have work I love and so much to be grateful for. Sure I now have to wait a few hours to catch the next flight home.

It's a familiar feeling. Your friend has made the team for Saturday's big game, and you take certain pleasure in telling him you can't be there to watch him play. You smile, but that voice in you asks, why him and not you?

Envy is a fault that we like to keep secret. It raises its ugly head when we focus on what we want but don't possess now, or we may even wish for and take pleasure in someone losing it. Feelings of unfairness are part of being human, but when you focus on them, you can never get out of your dark emotions. And that makes you feel bad.

So is there a solution? Is there anything you can do to stop the most ungenerous emotions?

Well, why not turn envy on its head, and make it the encouragement you need for self-improvement? The best weapon against envy is not to compete where you can't shine, but to do your absolute best where you can.

Start by making peace with yourself, and accept the gifts which make you unique. Make an agreement with yourself to be the best you can be. Then find out exactly the circumstances and qualities in others that start your envy. Is it someone's singing voice, their work promotion, or their new car? Envy shows us the things we'd like to have, so make a plan to earn what's important to you. Sign up for a night class. Start a training program. Give up a treat or two, and start saving for what you want.

And aim for real pleasure in the achievements and good fortune of others. Cheer on your friend when he scores that goal. Enjoy your best friend's wedding day. Then go out and do something special, and make you wonderfully proud of yourself.

Tips for Teaching Kids Responsibility

Your best friend has a teenager who helps with housework without being asked. You cousin has a one-year-old child that puts her bottle in the sink when she finishes the milk, but no reminders are needed. __1__ Raising helpful, good kids who know how to make a sandwich is not a fantasy! The following tips can give you a better chance of raising a responsible child who then grows into a responsible adult.

__2__ You can't suddenly spring responsibility on a teenager and expect he will know how to follow through. He needs time to practice and totally understand what responsibility means.

Let kids help you. Don't complain when it's time to do housework. Smile and invite your son to help. __3__ He will take these good feelings and learn to take ownership of his home and feel pride in keeping it up.

__4__ Make responsibilities age-appropriate. You can show how to complete small tasks in daily life and perform them at a child's skill level. For example, if your kid wants a snack, show him where the apples are and how to wash one off.

Teach your child consequences. Learning to take care of his things also helps a child develop a sense of responsibility for his actions. Get your son to clean up after an art project, and inform him that he won't be able to play with his crayons the next day if he leaves a messy table. __5__ The more you carry out the rules, the more likely he is to clean up without being asked.

A. Have a sense of responsibility.

B. Why do they make a sandwich for kids? C. Show kids how to perform responsibility. D. Where do these wonderful children come from?

E. Teaching responsibility to kids needs to start early.

F. When your child is invited to participate, he feels valued.

G. Then take away his supplies if he does not take his responsibility. 答案与解析 【文章大意】 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要对如何让自己的孩子变得有责任感给出几点提示。
