We will win something, but we also lose something in life. Write on the entitled “ Good loser or better loser”

A question often asked is:\ It is plain that they are habits and traits. One may gain no inconsiderable body of learning in some special field of knowledge without at the same time acquiring those habits and traits which are the marks of an eduacted gentleman. An education will make its mark and find its evidences in certain traits, characteristics, and capacities which have to be acquired by patient endeavor,by following good example ,and by receiving wise discipline and right struction. These traits or

characteristics may be classified. Among them are five that should always stand out to be seen of all ecucated man.

The first of these is correctness and precision in the use of the mother tongue. As we hear and see ,the quite much of the spoken language,as well as the written, are shoking slovenliness and vulgarity. Though, some of them who beyond peradventure that years of attendance upon schools and colleges have produced no impression.

A second and indispensable trait of the educated man is refined and gentle manners, which are themselves the expression of fixed habits of thought and action. When manners are superficial,

artificial, artificial, and forced,no matter what their form, they are bad manners. When, they are the natrual expression of fixed habits of thought and action, they are good manners. The gentlman instinctively knows the difference between them. So,he will know he may and should do and may not and should not do. A third trait of the educated man is the power and habit of reflection. A lot of people live on the surface or far beyond the present moment and that part of the future. They don't read those works of prose and poetry which have become classic because they reveal power and habit of reflection and induce that power and habit in others. A fourth trait of the educated man is the power of growth. He continues to grow and develop from birth to his dying day. His interests expand, his contacts multiply, his knowledge increases, and his reflection becomes deeper and wider.

A fifth trait of the educated man is his possesion of efficiency,or the power to do. The mere dreamer lacks something which an education

requires. The power to do may be exercised in any one of a thousand ways. Given these five characteristices, one has the outline of an educated man. That outline may be filled in by scholarship,by literary power,by mechanical skills,by business competence or by social and political leadership.

Many scientists, from their earlier work, have enough knowledge to make good guesses as to the solution to a problem they are working on. In making new discoveries, they may use the trial-and-error method, they may draw on past expericences, or they may try to find out what others have discovered. They may design new investigations and new ways of testing their results. Scientists have to train themselves to use their brains efficiently; that is ,they train themselves to think. For example, when Thomas A. Edison was trying to make an electric lamp, he needed a substance for the filament inside the bulb that would glow brightly without burning up quickly. He tried more than one thousand different filaments before he found one that he could use. After each trial he thought about how the new substance had acted. He kept notes and compared results. After he had experimented for a long time, someone asked Mr. Edison whether he was discouraged at the waste of time. He replied,\I have not been wasting time. I have found one thousand materials that won't work. Now I can look for others.\important. Above all, scientists demand to know when and where they are wrong. A good question to ask in science is not :\I wrong?\

Scientists spend many years of study, trainging themselves in using their brains and the tools of investigation. They also use each other's work. Isaac Newton, a British scientist, who lived over 300 years ago, said he saw further than others because he stood on the shoulders of giants.
