Hundreds of years ago, a Roman army came north from England to make war on Scotland. The Scots, a brave people, loved their country very much. They fought hard to drive the enemy out of Scotland, but there were too many Romans. It looked as if the Romans would win.
One night, the leader of Scots marched his soldiers to the top a hill. “We will rest here tonight, my men,” he said. “Tomorrow we will fight one more battle. We must win or we will die.”
They were all very tired, so they ate their supper quickly and fell asleep. There were four guards on duty, but they, too, were very tired, and one by one, also fell asleep. The Romans were not asleep. Quickly they gathered at the foot of the hill. Slowly they climbed up the hillside, taking care not to make a sound. Closer and closer they came to the sleeping Scots. They were almost at the top. A few minutes more, the war would be over. Suddenly, one of them put his foot on a thistle. He cried out and his sudden cry woke the Scots. In a moment, they were on their feet and ready for battle. The fighting was hard but it did not last long. The Scots wiped out the Romans and saved their country.
The thistle is not a beautiful plant. It has sharp needles all over it. Few people like it. But the people of Scotland liked it so much that they made it their national flower.

Passage 2
Some teenagers think that newspapers are boring and only for adults. But that’s not true. There are many interesting stories in the paper. You just need to make clear what you are looking at. “I spend about half an hour reading newspapers every day,”said 15-year-old Gao Ming from Beijing.“I’m interested in things happening at school.”School news is just one kind of news story in newspapers. There’s also world news: from international problems to pop stars. Read the newspaper carefully, we’ll find different types of articles on the pages. News stories —— these stories are about events. Reporters try to show all points of a story to help readers understand what happened. Reporters try to speak to as many people as possible. They also use pictures and numbers to show the readers that the stories are true. The newspaper Teenagers has lots of news stories on the news page and front page. When we read them, we learn more about the facts, not the writers’ ideas.
Opinion writing —— opinion writing is usually about something happening right now. But it isn’t just facts. Here writers add their own opinions to the news. Writers pick only the facts that help back up their ideas. They make readers believe that they are telling the truth. This is usually the kind of story that gets people thinking. Go to “Speak Out” on Page Two for an example of opinion writing in Teenagers.

How much paper do you use every year? Maybe you can't answer this question quickly. In 1900 the world's use of paper was about one kilogram for each person in a year. Now some countries use 50 kilograms of paper for each person in a year. But countries like America, England and Sweden, certainly use more paper than other countries.
Paper was first made in China about 2,000 years ago. It was made from the hairline parts of certain plants. Paper was not made in southern Europe until about the year 1100. In 1500, a German named Schaeffer found out that one could make the best paper from trees. After that the forest countries of Canada, Sweden, America, Finland became the most important ones in paper making.
When we think of paper, we think of newspapers, books and writing paper. But

there are many other uses. Only half of the paper is used for books and magazines. Paper is very good for keeping you warm. Houses are often insulated with paper. You may see some people sleep on a large number of newspapers. They're insulating themselves from the cold. In Finland the temperature is something -40 degrees of centigrade. The farmers wear paper boots in the snow. Nothing could be warmer.
Each year more and more things are made of paper. We have had cups and plates for a long time. Now we hear that chairs, tables and even beds can be made of paper. With paper boots and shoes, you can wear paper hats, paper dresses and paper raincoats. When you have used them once, you throw them away and buy new ones.

Passage 4
When I was pursuing my studies in Florida, I came across an American classmate of mine in the street, with whom I got along pretty well in normal times. He said to me, “Our class will have a party this Saturday at 3:00 pm, room 101.You should bring a Chinese dish or dessert. Can you make it?”
Immediately I thought that I was always a gentleman who had never cooked. How could I cook a Chinese dish or dessert or things like that. Therefore I said with curtness finally, “No, I can not make it.” My American classmate seemed a little disappointed at what I said, and turned away with a shrug.
On the day of the party, I bought a dessert and went to the party on time. At the sight of me, that American classmate opened his eyes wide and said, “I thought you could not make it.”
“I bought it. I did not make it myself,” I held the dessert in my hands in front of
