Oliver Twist

During the process of industrialization, the capitalist dominated the whole society in ruthless, brutal and bland way. With the development of society, Romantic Mind faded away and Realism took its place to become social mainstream culture. More and more people began to realize bloody and horrific reign of capitalist. Especially the proletariat contended with capitalist for their rights and interest. In the meanwhile, society sprung up a host of famous realistic writer such as Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, Lewis Carroll and so on.

Charles Dickens who is a representative and founder of critical realism in Britain. He was born in a poor family suffered the tremendous pain in his childhood, but he didn’t abandoned himself in such surroundings and overcame difficulty to become talented through self-study. Charles Dickens showed his specific vision from his life experience to reveal ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden in the bottom of society in his novel.

Oliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens’, is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in the Victorian Period.

The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, who was an orphan, suffered much pain from hunger, cold and maltreatment in hospice. Finally, he couldn’t endured abuse and was forced to flee to London by

foot alone. Here he receive training from the criminal gang of Fagin that includes the brutal thief Bill Sykes, the famous ‘Artful Dodger’ and Nancy, Bill whore. Oliver is rescued by the intervention of a benefactor, Mr Brown. But, at that time, the mysterious Monks plotted the gang to kidnap the boy again. Nancy intervened but was murdered viciously by Sykes after she has showed some redeeming qualities and has discovered Monks’ sinister intention. The story ends happily and with justice for Bumble and the cruel Monks who has hidden the truth of Oliver Twist parentage out of malice.

Seen from Charles Dickens’ work, he was a outstanding wordsmith and adept to apply writing techniques such as irony, humor and overstatement in his works. He modeled numerous figure with imposing character in high art summary, vivid details description, meticulous psychoanalysis way. His works not only mirror the real features of British society in the Victorian era but also has the unique charm and the huge artistic power which can stimulate indignation, abominate, sympathy and devotion of reader.
