Unit 1 College Life

Part III. Listening Comprehension Section A

Directions: In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 long conversations. At the end of each conversation, one or more questions will be asked about what was said. Both the conversations and the questions will be spoken only once. After each question there will be a pause. During the pause, you must read the four choices marked A), B), C) and D), and decide which is the best answer. Then write the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet II.

11. M: I?ve been trying every bookstore in town for a copy of the chemistry textbook.

The school?s bookstore ran out for quite some time.

W: Have you tried the one near the Sam?s? I heard they still have a few copies

left.

Q: What does the woman suggest the man do?

12. M: I paid 50 dollars for these books at the Eaglewood Bookstore. They?re really

too expensive.

W: Too expensive? They cost a lot more in other bookstores. Q: What does the woman mean?

13. W: Look, it says they want a junior sales manager, and it looks like it?s a big

company. That?d be good. You might get to travel. M: Do they say anything about experience? Q: What are they talking about?

14. W: Could you post this parcel for me when you go out for lunch?

M: I wish I could, but there?s always a very long queue during lunch time. Q: What does the man mean?

15. M: Hey, you should be doing your art class now. Why are you here?

W: I realized I have no talent for drawing. Drama is a better alternative than those

brushes.

Q: What does the woman mean?

16. W: Professor Johnston has been very busy this month. I?ve heard that he stays up

very late every night.

M: If I had known this I wouldn?t have troubled him so much. Q: What do we learn from the conversation?

17. W: One of the members of the dormitory council is quitting. Do you know of

anyone who would be interested in taking her place? M: I?m not sure. But I?ll certainly keep an eye out for you. Q: What will the man probably do?

18. M: I have never understood how to use the card catalogue, and I need this

information today.

W: Why not pick up one of the guidebooks at the front desk? It will help you, I?m

sure.

Q: Where does the conversation happen?

1 / 43

Now you will hear two long conversations. Conversation 1

M: Let?s discuss your educational background, Ms. Kelly. You were an English major,

weren?t you?

W: Yes. That?s right. It was my best subject at college.

M: Fine. And could you tell me what kind of work experience you?ve had?

W: My last position was with Loomis and Martin. That?s a law firm in Sacramento. M: And when was that exactly? W: From 2007 to 2012. M: Uh huh.

W: Before that I worked for Bishop and Baldwin. That was from 2005 to 2007. And

I?ve been doing freelance work for the last few months.

M: Well, Ms. Kelly, your qualifications for the job are excellent. Could you tell me

what kind of salary you are expecting?

W: Well, in my last job I was making $3,500 a month. I understand that this position

has a starting salary of around $3,600. M: That?s right.

W: That would be fine with me.

M: And is there anything you?d like to ask about the job?

W: Yes, I?d like to know if the company provides opportunities for further education. M: Yes, our employees are allowed to take up to six hours a week at full pay to attend

college courses. W: That?s very generous.

M: Is there anything else you?d like to know? W: No, not at this time.

M: Well, I?ve enjoyed meeting and talking with you. We?ll call you within the week. W: Thank you. I appreciate the time you?ve given me.

Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 19. Where did Ms. Kelly work from 2007 to 2012?

20. How long did Ms. Kelly work for Bishop and Baldwin?

21. What kind of salary is Kelly expecting for the prospective job? 22. What?s the advantage of taking the job?

Conversation 2

W: Oh, hi Bob. Long time no see!

M: Hi, Jane. I was in the neighborhood, so I thought I?d drop by.

W: Come on in. Take a seat. Would you like anything to drink? I have Sprite and

orange juice.

M: Sprite would be fine. Uh, so, how have you been? W: Oh, not bad. And you?

M: Oh, I?m doing okay, but school has been really hectic these days, and I haven?t had

time to relax.

W: By the way, what?s your major anyway? M: Hotel Management.

W: Well, what do you want to do after you graduate?

M: Uh… I haven?t decided for sure, but I think I?d like to work for a hotel or travel

agency in this area. How about you?

2 / 43

W: Well, when I first started college, I wanted to major in French, but I realized I

might have a hard time finding a job using the language, so I changed my major to Computer Science. With the right skills, landing a job in the computer industry shouldn?t be as difficult.

M: So, do you have a part-time job to support yourself through school?

W: Well, fortunately for me I received a four-year academic scholarship that pays for

all of my tuition and books. M: Wow. That?s great.

W: Yeah. How about you? Are you working your way through school? M: Yeah. I work three times a week at a restaurant near campus. W: Oh. What do you do there? M: I?m a cook.

W: How do you like your job?

M: It?s okay. The other staff are friendly, and the pay isn?t bad.

Questions 23 to 25 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 23. What is the woman majoring in?

24. What does the man want to do after he graduates?

25. How does a four-year academic scholarship support the woman?

Section B
