Francis Scott Fitzgerald, born on September 24, 1896, an American novelist, was once a student of St. Paul Academy, the Newman School and attended Princeton University for a short while. In 1917 he joined the army and was posted in Alabama, where he met his future wife Zelda Sayre. Then he had to make some money to impress her.

His life with her was full of great happiness, as he wrote in his diary: “My own happiness in the past often got such joy that I could share it even with the person dearest to me but had to walk it away in quiet streets and take down parts of it in my diary.”

This Side of Paradise, his first novel, was published in 1920. Encouraged by its success, Fitzgerald began to devote more time to his writing. Then he continued with the novel The Beautiful and Damned (1922), a collection of short stories Tales of the Jazz Age (1922), and a play The Vegetable (1923). But his greatest success was the novel The Great Gatsby, published in 1925, which quickly brought him praise from the literary world. Yet it failed to give him the needed financial security. Then, in 1926, he published another collection of short stories All the Sad Young Men.

However, Fitzgerald's problems with his wife Zelda had an effect on his writing. During the

As a child, Helen Cordero liked listening to the stories told by her grandfather each evening. She imagined telling the same stories to her own grandchildren. She grew up to become a famous artist.

Helen began as a potter(制陶工人), making beautiful bowls. Her most popular piece of artwork, however, was a small figure of a seated woman holding a baby in her arms. She called it Singing Mother.

3

People loved the Singing Mother figures. To buy them, museum collectors travelled to the Cochiti Pueblo in Northern New Mexico where Mrs Cordero lived. She could not make them fast enough to keep up with the needs.

One day, a pottery collector suggested that the artist add more children to her Singing Mother figures. She immediately thought of her grandfather, Santiago Quintana. She liked the idea, because as she said, “There were always lots of grandchildren around him.” So, in 1964, the first Storyteller figure was born.

The first piece she made was a grandfather sitting, with five children around him. Each child had a different facial expression. The grandfather's mouth was wide open. So many people wanted the figures that she gave up her other artwork to work on the Storytellers.

To make her figures, Mrs Cordero preferred the brown clay(黏土) of her hometown, and often walked a long way to collect it. She talked to the tiny figures in an effort to put her own “happy, special feeling” into every character she created.

Mrs Cordero was always surprised that her Storytellers were enjoyed by so many people. But her admirers(赞赏者) know why her work is so well liked. She was an excellent artist who refused to take shortcuts. She once said, “To make good pottery, you have to do it the right way, the old way.”

Today we are thankful to both Helen Cordero and her grandfather. The Storyteller figures make us remember the kind people in our own lives who have told us stories to live by.

Rodney Smith Jr. started mowing the lawns (割草坪) in Huntsville, Alabama last fall. He used his time between classes at Alabama A&M University to reach a goal of mowing 100 yards before winter. Smith has been cutting grass for free to help single mums, the elderly and the disabled, while teaching the local youth the values that can turn boys into men. “I'm doing something positive. I want boys to follow me and be better than me,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Rodney is from Bermuda. He says people there help each other and are always friendly. “That's what drives me to help people.”

In May this year, he was getting ready to launch his mowing service for the summer when he heard about a 93-year-old woman trying to cut grass by herself. Smith and a friend showed up to do the job for her.

In November, a local TV station gave him $300, calling it a special gift for his good work. After he received the money, he used it to create the non-profit(非盈利的) service group—Raising Men Lawn Care Service. He also started a page to collect money to buy lawn equipment and other things—including T-shirts with special logos.

After I read about Rodney's story, I told my friends about him. We also planned to mow lawns for single mums, the elderly and the disabled in our neighbourhood. And I hope more and more

young people will join Rodney's service group—Raising Men Lawn Care Service.

8.What was Rodney Smith, Jr.'s goal last fall? A.To mow 100 yards for free. B.To start a non-profit service group.
