英汉互译讲义一 翻译方法

一、直译法（literal translation）和意译法（free translation）

(一) 直译的例子：

1．crocodile tears鳄鱼的眼泪;

2．armed to the teeth武装到牙齿;

3．chain reaction连锁反应;

4．gentlemen’s agreement君子协定;

5．one country, two systems 一国两制;

6．The three religions and the nine schools of thought 三教九流;

7．paper tiger 纸老虎;

8．breath one’s last---断气; go to one’s external rest---安息; the long sleep---长眠; see Marx 见马克思; Go west 上西天; go to heaven 上天堂; blow out the candles 吹灯拔蜡

（二）直译不等于死译(dead translation): 1．街道妇女应动员起来打扫卫生：Women in the street should be called on to do some cleaning.

“In the street” should be replaced by “in the community”. 2．她一大早起床，进城，见到了她的公爹：She got up early, went to the town and saw her public father. Public father should be father in law.

（三）意译的例子：

1．只能意译：

It rains cats and dogs

2．句子比较：Little fish does not eat big fish

直译：小鱼不吃大鱼 意译：胳膊拧不过大腿

3．试译：天有不测风云，人有旦夕祸福：

直译：Storms gather without warning in nature and bad luck befalls men overnight.

意译：The weather and human life are both unpredictable

4．有人说，翻译是带着镣铐跳舞（translation is like dancing in fetters）；还有人说，翻译像女人，忠实的不漂亮，漂亮的不忠实。实际上，忠实与通顺的关系是辩证关系。

二、音译法

（一）专有名词的翻译

1．人名的翻译

（1）英语中人名译成汉语，大多用音译法。例如：

George Bush 乔治·布什

Albert Einstein 阿尔伯特·爱因斯坦

Tchaikovsky 柴科夫斯基

Shakespeare 莎士比亚

（2）如果原名中有所写的英语字母，在汉语中可以予以保留。例如：

John F. Kenndy 约翰 F 肯尼迪

J. Edger Hoover J. 埃德加·胡佛

（3）有些同名同姓的人，为了区分彼此，特意在姓名后面加上了数字或缩写字母，译成汉语时也应当把数字或缩写字母所包含的意思表达出来。例如：

Elizabeth II 伊丽莎白二世

George VI 乔治六世

Tom Black, Jr. 小汤姆·布莱克

John Smith, Sr. 老约翰·史密斯

（4）凡取了中国名字的外国人，一般不再音译其英语姓名，而直接使用其中国名字。例如：

John Leighton Stuart 司徒雷登 Ferdinandus Verbiest 南怀仁

（5） 中国人的姓名，基本上用汉语拼音。例如：

毛泽东 Mao Zedong 孔子 Confucious

邓小平 Deng Xiaoping 孟子 Mencious

江泽民 Jiang Zemin 李白 Li Bai

胡锦涛 Hu Jintao 杜甫 Du Fu

（6）使用音译法要注意：

1）为使音译名词不至于过长，某些不明显的音可不译出。如：

Engels 恩格斯（不必译成“恩格尔斯”）

hysteria 歇斯底里 （不必译成“歇斯底里呀）

2）避免使用容易引起不良的联想意义或褒贬意义的字。如：
