明朝万历二十年间，京城名妓杜十娘偶遇富家子弟李甲，两人相互爱慕，情投意合。杜十娘虽有意嫁于李甲，但李甲生性懦弱，怕家中父亲反对，不敢答应。虽如此，两人仍终日相守，如夫妻一般。这引起了妓院老鸨的不满，要求李甲凑三百两银子换杜十娘自由之身。李甲在京城挥霍无度，早已花光自己的盘缠。两人便商定让李甲外出借钱。但李甲名声不佳，亲戚朋友都找借口托词，一连三天，分文未借。李甲无颜面对杜十娘便前往同乡柳遇春家借宿。十娘得知不归之因，便将自己的一百五十两碎银交给他。后得柳生赞助一百五十两，交于老鸨。姐妹们知道十娘要走，纷纷不舍，临行前交给十娘一个箱子。李甲问箱中何物，十娘笑而不答。杜十娘与李甲乘船回乡途中在瓜州渡口靠岸时遇到富家少爷孙富，孙富生性风流，贪恋十娘美貌，便教唆李富将杜十娘以千金银两之价送给自己。李甲本就惧怕家中父亲，又花光钱财，一无所获，便听信孙富用千金银两讨好父亲。杜十娘得知自己被卖弄，万念俱灰。但她仍答做这笔交易。后来，杜十娘当众打开箱子，里面珠宝首饰应有尽有。原来十娘知道老鸨贪财，早有从良的打算，日积月累了一个百宝箱。她在船上怒斥李甲和孙富后，抱着百宝箱投江而死。 Lady Du Angrily Sinks Her Treasure-Chest Abstract
