It was my birthday last Thursday. I invited a few friends out to supper. I chose a restaurant in a quiet part of town. It is one of my favorite restaurants because the food is good and the waiters are friendly. Because few people know about it, it is not usually necessary to book (预订) a table.

When we entered the restaurant, I was surprised to find that it was completely full. One of the waiters saw us. He came across and explained the situation.

“A group of tourists came in about half an hour ago,” he said. “Suddenly the place was full! We can hardly manage!” The waiter then pointed (指着) to a

table in the corner. “The people there are just about to leave. Just hold on and that table will be ready for you soon.”

He was right. Fifteen minutes later, the people at the corner table got up and left. I led my friends across and we all sat down.
