Get a pair of students to stand up and act as Anne and Tom. It is time for the teacher to be the interpreter between them. Encourage both sides to give different sentences, including statements and questions.
T: In the last lesson, we learned Anne Frank’s story. She is telling her stories to two of her friends—you and Tom. Tom has something wrong with his ears,so you have to repeat Anne’s sentences, using indirect speech. Sometimes you explain Tom’s sentences to Anne.
Anne: “I don’t want to set down a series of facts in a diary.” said Anne. → Teacher: Anne said that she didn’t want to set down a series of facts in a diary. Tom: “Dose a friend always have to be a person?” Tom asked Anne. → Teacher: Tom asks Anne if/whether a friend always has to be a person. Tom: “What do you call your diary?” Tom asked. → Teacher: Tom asked what she called her diary. ...
Step2 Grammar(15 min)
The students will learn the use of Direct Speech and Indirect Speech (statements and questions). First try to make clear to the students what direct and indirect speech is, with the help of the practice in step 1. then give them some examples. At last get them to summarize the rules of direct speech and indirect speech.
T: Now let’s look at these sentences again. If we want to change Direct Speech into Indirect Speech, what should be changed?
1.“I don’t want to set down a series of facts in a diary.” said Anne.→ Anne said that she didn’t want to set down a series of facts in a diary. (I →she don’t →didn’t that)
2.“Dose a friend always have to be a person?” Tom asks Anne. →
Tom asksAnne if/whether a friend always has to be a person. (if /whether)
3.“What do you call your diary?” Tom asked→ Tom asked what she called her diary.
(you→she,call→ called what order疑问语序变成陈述语序) 4. The boy said, “I have not heard from Mary since may.”→ The boy said that he had not heard from Mary since may. (现在完成时变成过去完成时) 5. Cella said, “I am using a knife.”→
Cella said that she was using a knife.(现在进行时变成过去进行时) 6. They said, “we saw her in the street.”→
They said that they had seen her in the street.(过去式变成过去完成时) 7. The lawyer said, “I will come this morning.”→ The lawyer said that he would come that morning. (引导词,人称,时态,时间短语) 8. He said, “those books are mine.”→ He said that these books were his. (人称, 引导词,指示代词,时态) 9. “Do your homework!”,the teacher said. The teacher asked us to do our homework. Ask sb. (not) to do.

1).Turn to Page 5. Please change the following direct speech into indirect speech and indirect into direct.
1. “I’m going to hide from the Germans,” Anne said.
2. “I don’t know the address of my new home,” said Anne.
3. “I cannot ask my father because it is not safe to know,” she said. 4. “I had to pack up my things very quickly,” the girl said.
5. “Why did you choose your diary and old letters?” Dad asked her. 6. Mum asked her if/whether she was very hot with so many clothes on. 7. Margot asked her what else she had got.
8. Anne asked her father when they would go back home. 9. Anne asked her sister how she could see her friends.
10. Mother asked Anne why she had gone to bed so late the night before.
