Many kinds of animals and plants have been dying out and some are in danger. Finding ways to protect the earth’s wildlife and the natural world they live in is now more important than ever.

Dodo

The Dodo is a classic example of how humans did harm to the earth’s biology. The Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean was home to the flightless(不能飞的) bird—Dodo. It fed on fruit fallen from the island's trees and was not troubled until humans arrived in 1505. The easily caught birds became food for sailors and was eaten by animals introduced to the island by humans such as pigs, monkeys and rats. The population of Dodos rapidly dropped and the last one was killed in 1681.

Whales

The International Whaling Commission is fighting to make sure of the living of the whale. Although one third of the world's oceans have been set up as whale sanctuaries(保护区), 7 out of 13 whale species remain endangered. Hunted for their rich supply of oil, their numbers have dropped to just 300. Hits with ships, water pollution and being caught in fishing nets are other major causes of whale deaths.

Tigers

In the last 100 years, 95% of tigers in the world have disappeared and only between 5, 000 and 7, 000 are still living. The Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers can’t be seen now. The South China tiger is close to disappearing, with only 20 to 30 still alive. Tigers’ bones and organs(器官) are hunted for as traditional Chinese medicine. These things are traded against the law along with tigers’ skins.
