I first went to Harrow in the summer term. The school had the biggest swimming pool I had ever seen. It was a good joke to come up behind a naked boy, and push him into the pool. I made quite a habit of this with boys of my own size or less.

One day I saw a boy wrapped in a towel on the side of the pool. He was as small as I was, so I thought him a fair game. Coming secretly behind, I pushed him in , holding on to his towel so that it would not get wet, I was surprised to see an angry face come out from the water, and a being of great strength making its way by fierce strokes (猛力地划) to the shore. I fled, but in vain.(徒劳) He overtook me, seized me violently, and threw me into the deepest part of the pool. I soon climbed out on the other side, and found myself surrounded by a crowd of younger boys. “Do you know what you have done?” they said, “It’s Amery; he is in Grade Six. He is champion at gym; he has got his football honor.”

I was frightened and felt ashamed. How could I tell his position when he was wrapped in a bath towel and so small? He didn’t seem pleased at all, so I added in a most brilliant word, “My father, who is a great man, is also small.” At this he laughed, and after some general words about

If you have ever been sad because of failure, please remember, for often, achieving(获得) what you set out to do is not the important thing.

A boy decided to dig a deep hole behind his house. As he was working, a couple of older boys stood by to watch. “What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors. “I want to dig a hole all the way through the earth!” the boy answered excitedly. The older boys began to laugh, telling him that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible. After a while, the boy picked up a jar. He showed it to the visitors. It was full of spiders, worms and other insects. Then he said quietly and confidently, “Even if I can’t dig all the way through the earth, look what I found along the way!”

The boy’s goal was far too difficult, but it did cause him to dig. And that is what a goal is for ---to cause us to move in the direction we have chosen(选择), in other words, to cause us to dig! Not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end successfully. Not every dream will come true. Not every love will last. But when you fall short of your aim, maybe you can say, “Yes, but look what I found along the way! Look at the wonderful things which have come into my life because I tried to do something!”

It is in the digging that life is lived. And I believe it is joy in the journey that really matters. 56. The older boys laughed at the boy because he was thought to be ______.

A. no dream can come true B. all work will end successfully C. goals shouldn’t be set too high D. goals will make us work harder 59. The best title for the passage should be _____.

A. Joy in the journey B. A boy dug a hole

C. No pains, no gains D. Failure is the mother of success 60. Which statement is WRONG in the writer’s opinion?

A. It’s not important for us to achieve what we set out to do.

B. Not all dreams will come true. C. It’s very good to dig a hole in life.

D. Although the boy couldn’t dig a hole through the earth, he got lots of achievements.
