A Big Pond Is Better

In recent years, there has been a rising number of college graduates deciding to work in second- or third-tier cities, they hold the idea that they are big fish in a small pond which means more support and less competition. But as far as I am concerned, big cities are more beneficial for graduates’ career development.

First and foremost, big cities can provide a massive of posts. There are two reasons why vocations are considerable in big cities. On one hand, most of the top local enterprises head quarter in and origin from the four first-tier cities, like Huawei is based in Shenzhen, Xiaomi is in Beijing, Hengda is in Guangzhou. The companies I’ve mentioned are all top and famous enterprises in China with great need of talents.

On the other hand, Foreign-funded enterprises’ headquarters are mainly oriented to the four first-tier cities. The main reasons for enterprises to choose big cities are that the economy is relatively developed, transportation is convenient, technology and equipment are relatively perfect, and the policy environment is good. For instance, Apple from Silicon Valley, Muji from Japan and so on are based in shanghai, Microsoft are based in Beijing, P&G from US are based in Guangzhou. Therefore, the environment of big cities is more beneficial for college graduates to develop.

Second, the development space and resources in big cities are larger and more flexible than small cities, owing to their well equipped infrastructure, their high consideration from government, their high urbanization. Just as the 2008 Olympic Games was held in Beijing, the Sixteenth Asian Games in 2010 was held in Guangzhou, the China-Africa Economic Forum was held in Beijing this year. All these big events did not only generate jobs and bring talents together but also provide opportunity and resources for the youth to train which are totally will not exist in small cities.

Moreover, good environment also plays an important part in career development. Those big events and talents agglomeration finally contribute to a prosperous and positive environment both in culture and economic that small cities do not have nowadays. As a well known story of A frog in a well, a frog that lives inside a well only sees the sky through a limited circle—limited circle is the rim of the well. So does the small cities, people in small cities has limited resources and finite horizon. On the contrary, small cities may sometimes limit some graduates’ abilities.

Finally, big cities still take the advantage over the small cities even if graduates do not want to enter companies but begin their entrepreneurship. Why big cities are more appropriate to begin entrepreneurship than small cities? First, big cities usually have great population which can transform into giant market. Consuming market is the most important ingredient of beginning an entrepreneurship. Second, supporting policies on beginning entrepreneurship are well adhered to big cities. The ways for college graduates to get the first fund or financing are multiple and varied as well.

In conclusion, be a diligent fish in a big pond with a large space to grow up and grow bigger, but not merrily live in small pond for a whole life. Competition must exist in big cities, but be born at hardship, died of happiness and no pressure no power is the truth.
