D. Miss Velasquez doesn’t care about the hurtful comments and goes on writing ( C)

Last year I went to Nepal for three months to work in a hospital. I think it’s important to see as much of a country as you can, but it’s difficult to travel around Nepal. The hospital let me have a few days’ holiday, so I decided to go into the jungle and I asked a Nepalese guide, Kamal Rai, to go with me.

We started our trip at six in the morning with two elephants carrying our things. It was hot, but Kamal made me wear shoes and trousers to protect me from snakes. In the jungle there was a lot of wildlife, but we were trying to find big cats, especially tigers. We climbed onto the elephants’ backs to get better view, but it is unusual to find tigers in the afternoon because they sleep in the heat of the day.

Then we saw a tiger a little far away from us. Kamal told me to be very quiet. We crept (爬行) nearer and found a dead deer (鹿), still bleeding (流血). This was the tiger’s lunch! Suddenly I started to feel very scared.

We heard the tiger a second (秒) before we saw it again. It jumped out so quickly. I looked into its eyes and face, and saw right down the animal’s throat. It took hold of Kamal’s leg between its teeth, but I succeeded in pulling (拉) Kamal away. One of our elephants ran at the tiger and made it go back into the grass, so we quickly escaped to let the tiger eat its lunch. That night it was impossible to sleep! 36. It was a quiet village in which there was a military camp(军营).It was far from the towns and cities and there were some high mountains around. Of course it was a good place for training the new soldiers. But it was difficult for the young men to go outside. Mr White, an officer of forty, was strict with them and he hardly let them leave the camp.

Once Mr White was ill in bed. He couldn’t work and a young officer, Mr Hunt began to train the new soldiers instead of him. He knew the young men well and let nine soldiers go to the nearest town to have a holiday. But night fell and none came back to the camp. He was worried about it and stood at the gate. It was five to twelve when Mr Hunt decided to go to the town and see what was happening to the young men. He started the car quickly and set off. At that moment the nine soldiers came back. It seemed they drank wine. Of course they found the officer was angry.

“I’m sorry, sir,” said the first soldier. “I left the town on time. But something was wrong with my bus on my way here. I had to buy a horse and made it run fast. Bad luck! It died and I had to run back.”

And the other seven soldiers said they were late for the same reasons. It was the last soldier’s turn. He said, “I’m sorry, sir. I got on a bus on time, but…”

Having heard this, the officer became even angrier and stopped him at once. He called out, “If you say something was wrong with your bus, I’ll punish you at once!”

Zhou, the father of a Junior 3 student in Nanjing, was sitting at home one day. All of a sudden, he realized he didn’t speak to his son’s teachers all term. He wasn’t even invited to a parents’ meeting!

Zhou decided to ask his son why. The answer his son gave him was a big surprise. Zhou’s son paid a man 25 yuan and asked him to be his “father” at a parents’ meeting!

“I did badly in my exams and I was afraid my father would find out,” says the boy. “I didn’t want him to be unhappy with me.”

The boy is not the only student to do that. Six of his classmates have used their pocket money to do that.

Most of them played the trick because they were afraid of the punishment. A few just didn’t want to make their parents feel angry.

Teachers say that parents are to blame (负责) for kids’ buying “fathers”. “Parents are demanding (要求) too much of their children,” they say. “Junior students often cannot meet their demands. And they don’t know how to face their parents when they do badly.”

Experts on teenagers say students should make friends with their parents. Then they will be able to have heart-to-heart talks with their parents. The talks will help to solve the problem. 根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
