Brute summary

The short story, Brute begins with the counsel of the author, Richard Selzer that medical staff should never let your own emotions influence the patients and the process of medical practice. First of all, he urges those in medical professions to imagine that when they go to a doctor and tell them that they have chest pains, all the doctor says in response is “I’m tired.” Furthermore, the author illustrates the significance of the above view with the experience of treating a black man. Twenty-five years ago, a large, strong, rearing, and roaring black man with a long wound on his forehead was escorted by policemen into the Emergency Room to get treatments, when it was two o’clock in the morning and he was tired. May be with the great dignity, the man refused violently to accept the treatment. The behaviors the man acted on enraged Selzer extremely, which made Selzer the brute and the subsequent cruel actions that he got the thread through each earlobe and then through the bed. Finally, Selzer completed the treatment, but he has been very sorry and compunctious for the behavior since then.
