The Taj Mahal (泰姬陵) is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and the finest example of the late style of Indian architecture (建筑). It is at Agra in northern India. It lies beside the River Jumma in the middle of gardens with quiet pools.

The Taj Mahal was built by the Mogul emperor (皇帝) Shah Jehan, who ruled India in the seventeenth century. It is in memory of his favorite wife, Arjumand Banu Bagam, known as Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. The building, which was completed between 1632 and 1638, was designed by a local Muslim architect (建筑师), Ustad Ahmad Lahori. The whole building, with gardens and gateway structures, was completed in 1643. The Taj Mahal stands at one end of the garden tomb with marble (大理石) path. The room is softly lighted by the light that passes through double screens of carved marble set high in the walls. The building now is kept in good condition.

It took 22 years to build the Taj Mahal. Shah Jehan planned a similar building, but in black instead of white, to lie on the other side of the river. But before it could be built, Shah Jehan was imprisoned (监禁) by his son and buried next to his wife in the Taj Mahal.

In any area that attracts a lot of tourists, high season is the time when prices shoot up and in any case you must pay top dollar. In low season, prices are low, but many find the lonely streets and bad weather during it. Shoulder season between high season and low season is when prices drop, but the travel experience is still good. Following are a few suggestions for shoulder seasons around the world.

In winter, while most of the US is busy shopping for presents, travelers to the US can find great values at tropical (热带的) beaches until Christmas week. Skiers who go to Europe can make use of the cheapest flights of the year from the US. In Japan and Korea you can experience snow-covered temples and comfortable rooms with heated floors.

In spring, flights to Europe start rising but are still far cheaper than during the summer months. This can be a good time to see the tulip (郁金香) fields of Holland or the green hills of Ireland. If you are studying or working in Europe, make use of any spring break to travel locally. Starting in mid-April, hotel prices and flights to Mexican beaches take a great drop. The months from March to May are great months to visit hot and dry countries such as Morocco, Egypt, and Jordan.

Summer is the toughest time to find a bargain. However, in June and early July Caribbean and Mexican destinations are at their lowest shoulder season prices. June to September is shoulder season in Kenya and Tanzania, when the high season is over, but the weather is still cool and dry. In Canada, there is a short shoulder season for national parks in the first two weeks of June and the last two weeks of August.

On a hill 600 feet above the surrounding land, we watch the lines of rain move across the scene, the moon rise over the hills, and the stars appear in the sky. The views invite a long look from a comfortable chair in front of the wooden house.

Every window in our wooden house has a view, and the forest and lakes seldom look the same as the hour before. Each look reminds us where we are.
