A boy was walking home from school when he saw a large, red apple on the tree near a house. The boy didn’t like eating 1 very much. He preferred a piece of chocolate if he was given the choice, but this time, seeing the nice apple, the boy wanted it very much. The more he looked at the apple, the 2 he felt and the more he wanted it.
He stood on tiptoe (脚尖), stretching (伸展) as high as he could, but he was still unable to touch it. He began to 3 up and down, as high as he could, at the top of each jump stretching his arms to get the apple. It is still out of 4 .
Not giving up, he thought, if he had something to 5 on, he could reach it. His school bag wouldn’t give enough height and he didn’t want to break the things inside. Looking 6 , he hoped he might find an old box, a rock, or, with luck, even a ladder, but he found nothing that he could 7 .
He had tried everything he could think of. Without seeing any other choices, he gave up and started to walk away. He felt angry and disappointed, thinking about what he did. The more he thought like this, the more unhappy he became.
However, the boy of our story was a clever one, even if he couldn’t always 8 what he wanted. He started to say to himself, “This isn’t helpful. I don’t have the apple and I’m feeling unhappy as well. Anger is a kind of feeling. Everybody has got it. Many things can make you angry. When your teacher gives you too much homework, when your team loses an important game, when a friend borrows your favorite video game and then breaks it, you can get really angry.
Usually, your body will tell you when you are angry. For example, you breathe (呼吸) faster, your face turns red, and you may want to break something or hit someone, but sometimes, you
5
hide your anger. For example, you may hide it in your heart. The problem is that if you do this, you may get a headache or your stomach (胃) may hurt.
In fact, it’s not good to hide your anger, and it’s important for you to get angry sometimes. But anger must be let out in the right way, without hurting others or yourself.
When you get angry, you can talk about it with other people. It’s helpful to talk about your anger with an adult, such as a parent, a teacher, etc. When you talk about anger, those bad feelings can start to go away. Here are some other things you can do when you start to feel angry: talk to a good friend; count from 1 to 100; give someone a hug; go for a bike ride; think about good things, etc.
Remember that how you act when you are angry can make everything better or worse. Don’t let your anger control (控制) you.
( ) 1. What may make you angry according to the writer? A. Your school teachers. C. Your broken video game. A. We should hide it quietly.
C. We should talk about it.
A. anger always hurt others.
B. A kind of feeling. D. Everyday housework. B. We should breathe faster. D. We should hit others to let it out. B. it’s natural to get angry .
( ) 2.What should we do when we get angry?
( ) 3. From the passage, we know that .
C. Parents and teachers are adult. D. you can’t control your anger.

You don’t need millions to be happy. In fact, at the Happiness Training Centre in Australia, a couple of hundred dollars may be enough.
The training centre opened its doors last year, and, since then, men and women of all ages have been paying A$200 an hour for lessons on how to feel great. “You can really increase your
happiness levels. That’s what we teach,” said Timothy Sharp, beginner of the centre. It is said that only about 1/6 of happiness comes from income (收入). As much as 5/6 comes from attitude (态度), relationships with others and so on.
Scientists now say part of the reason we are richer but not happier is that we compare ourselves to people who are better off. “The fact is that if you want to be happy, there’s a very simple thing you can do: compare yourself to people who are less well off than you — poorer, smaller house, etc.” said Sharp.
“If I compare myself to Bill Gates, then I’m always going to be down,” said Sharp.
1. Do people need a lot of money to be happy? 2. What do people want to increase in the centre? 3. Who first opened the Happiness Training Centre in Australia? 4. What should we do if we want to be happy? 5. What does the last sentence mean? 【反思巩固】
