Unit 2 Home alone

Teaching aims:
By the end of this period, students are expected to:
1. have a better understanding of the play through some reading exercises
2. write a short passage to describe an unhappy experience between parents and children
3. learn to solve the problems between parents and children properly
Teaching key points and difficult points:
1.to get the students to understand the theme of the play properly
2.to get the students to learn some useful words and phrases and use them in their writing
Teaching and learning methods
Task-based teaching method; Pair-work; Group-work
Teaching procedures:
Step1 Lead-in
Show the students a short video of the movie- Home Alone. After that, they will be required to answer two questions: What did you see in this video? What was the movie about?
Step 2 Review
Require the students to skim the text to answer some questions on the screen and then conduct a feedback activity.
Step 3 Blank-filling exercise
Lead the students to read these words and phrases together. than expected 比预期中的 can’t wait to do sth 迫不及待地做某事 be supposed to do sth 应该做某事 in (a) mess 一团糟 tolerate 忍受 shout at 对…大喊 run into 跑进 defend oneself 为某人自己辩解 explanation 解释 be hard on 对某人严厉 respect 尊重 1
2. Students will be required to do a blank–filling exercise by using the words and phrases above.
3. After the reading exercise, students will need to answer one question: Was the story related to the play pleasant or unpleasant?
Step 4 Oral discussion
Did you have any unpleasant experience with your parents? Why did it happen? Could you tell something about it?
After the discussion, we will come to a conclusion that almost every child will have some unhappy experiences with their parents because of the “generation gap”. Then a brief introduction of “generation gap” will be shown on the PPT: most conflicts (between parents and children) come from “generation gap”, differences in ways of doing things and understanding things.
Step 5 Group-work
Show some pictures for the students to talk about in spoken English. Through this activity, students will know how to describe a story briefly and how to describe a person’s feeling by using the proper adjectives.
Step 6 Writing
Students will be given 7 minutes to write a short passage to describe an unhappy experience between parents and children. Some students will be asked to read their writings. The other students and the teacher will comment on them.
Step 7 Conclusion
Make a short conclusion of the lesson and ask students to polish their writings after class.
